Over 280 vendors in our service area are visited every two years with a goal of educating individuals who sell alcohol about the relevant laws, regulations, and best practices to prevent sales to minors and ensure responsible sales.
Merchants are encouraged to:
Check I.D.s for all sales
Refuse sales if they suspect the product is being purchased for a minor
Post signs announcing no sales to anyone under 21.
Northwestern CSB partners with SAMHSA on disseminating this evidence-based media campaign that empowers parents and caregivers to talk with children early about alcohol and other drug use.
In partnership with local coalitions and law enforcement agencies, this initiative dedicates resources to increase enforcement presence, deter illegal alcohol use, and reinforce community norms against serving or allowing minors to drink.
Compliance checks are a tool law enforcement can use to reduce the availability of alcohol to underage youth from commercial sources such as bars, restaurants, liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores. By preventing youth access from commercial sources, communities can reduce the negative consequences associated with underage drinking, thereby creating a safer, healthier environment for their youth.
Prevention Action Alliance– A public health media campaign designed by Prevention Action Alliance to reinforce that it’s everyone’s responsibility to promote healthy choices in your community. Its key message reminds parents that it is unsafe, unhealthy, and unacceptable—and, in many communities, illegal—to provide alcohol for underage youth.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention – Young people under 21 who drink alcohol are more likely to have negative effects on their health, safety, and well-being, and underage drinking can also affect other people, like family, friends, and community members. You can support proven strategies that help young people reach their highest potential, with less pressure to drink.
Ask, Listen, Learn – Ask, Listen, Learn is a completely FREE digital underage drinking prevention program for kids ages 9-13 (grades 4-8) and their parents and educators with the goal to reduce underage drinking. The information provided throughout the program guides adults with ways to start communicating with kids about alcohol and the developing brain– and how to continue talking to them as part of a lifetime of conversations.
